Switch software licensing enables advanced features in certain ProCurve switches. The Premium license supports advanced routing features, including:
- OSPFv2, OSPFv3
- PIM Sparse Mode, PIM Dense mode
- VRRP
- QinQ (IEEE 802.1ad)
- BGP (starting with K.15.06.0006)
- VRRPv3 (starting with K.15.13.0003)

Use these steps to install a licensed feature in a switch.
- Locate the registration ID. When you purchase a software license, you receive a folded license registration card. The registration ID is located on the inside of the card, in the upper left corner.
- Get the switch's hardware ID. Establish a console connection to the switch CLI and enter Manager level, using the
enable
command if necessary and the switch password if required.Example

- The CLI returns a hardware ID number. Copy the hardware ID number from the screen. You must enter this number in the next step.
- Get the license key.
- Navigate to the My Networking portal at http://hp.com/networking/mynetworking/ and sign in.
- Click My Licenses.
- Enter the registration ID.
- Enter the registration details.
- Click next for hardware-id query.
- Accept the End User License Agreement. A license key is displayed.
- Copy the license key from the screen.
- Point your Web browser at the My HP Switch portal (http://my.HP Switch.com) and sign in.
- Click the My Licenses tab, enter the registration ID and the hardware ID.Copy the license key from the screen. A copy of the license key will be emailed to you.
- From a CLI console, save the switch configuration by using the command
write memory
. - Enter the license key into the switch. From a Manager-level prompt, issue the command
licenses install premium <
.license-key

- Reboot the switch to activate the licensed features.
Example
Starting with software versions A.15.16.xxxx, K.15.16.xxxx, RA.15.16.xxxx, and YA/YB.15.16.xxxx, the Premium license is automatically enabled. After the software is upgraded to these versions or later, the Premium license is activated no matter whether the premium license was installed for the previous version or not.
NOTE: This feature is already available for WB software. |
Upgrading to A.15.16.xxxx, K.15.16.xxxx, RA.15.16.xxxx, and YA/YB.15.16.xxxx or later version enables a permanent Premium license in the switch, which remains enabled even if the software is downgraded to the previous version. Use the
show license
command to identify the permanence of the Premium license.Example
NOTE: Starting with software version A.15.16.xxxx, K.15.16.xxxx, RA.15.16.xxxx, and YA/YB.15.16.xxxx, except for the auto-enabled Premium license, you cannot install a new license. Using the commands license hardware-id premium and License install-id premium causes an error message such as: License Key already installed, can't generate Hardware Id . |
Moving the license from the current device to another
The license key generated by the My HP Switch Portal can only be used to enable the license features on one device. The Premium license is portable, letting you move your license between devices.

To move your license from a current device to a different device, you must uninstall the license on the current device. A new registration ID will be generated for the new device once this procedure is complete.

- Select the My Licenses tab, and then select the Transfer licenses to new platform in the Manage Licenses section.
- Enter the uninstall ID and hardware ID.
- The device’s registration ID is generated and displayed.Copy the registration ID number from the screen.
- Obtain a new license key.
- Go to the My Networking portal (http://hp.com/networking/mynetworking/) and sign in.
- Select My Licenses.
- Enter the registration ID.
- Enter the registration details including the hardware id of the switch where you are installing the license.
- Accept the End User License Agreement.
- A license key is displayed. Copy the license key from the screen.
